Product Overview

The MRF454 is an NPN silicon epitaxial planar RF power transistor originally designed by Motorola, now supplied by MACOM and NXP. It targets linear SSB and CW HF power amplifiers covering 2 MHz ~ 30 MHz. Operating at 12.5 V nominal supply, it provides minimum 80W PEP/CW output power with typical 50% collector efficiency. Built-in emitter ballast resistors enhance tolerance to VSWR mismatch and prevent thermal runaway. Packaged in a 4-lead hermetic ceramic flange housing, it is widely used in marine, mobile, amateur radio and industrial HF communication devices.

Q1: What is the recommended operating voltage for MRF454?

A1: Nominal operating voltage is 12.5V DC. It supports standard 13.6V vehicle battery supply. Do not exceed the absolute maximum VCEO rating of 25V.

Q2: Can MRF454 directly replace MRF455?

A2: Not plug-and-play. MRF454 uses Case 211-11 (Style 2) package, while MRF455 adopts Case 211-07 (Style 1). Flange dimensions and pinout differ significantly. PCB modification is required for cross replacement.

Q3: What alternatives exist for this 12V 80W HF RF transistor?

A3: Common alternatives include MRF422 and SD1446. Note that SD1446 has lower power margin, and MRF422 features different gain characteristics. Circuit re-tuning is necessary after replacement.

Q4: What frequency range is the MRF454 designed for?
