Product Overview

The MRF171A is a gold-metallized N-channel enhancement-mode vertical DMOS RF power MOSFET for broadband industrial & commercial RF systems within 30 MHz ~ 200 MHz. Operating at 28V DC nominal voltage, it provides minimum 45W CW RF output power with stable gain and high efficiency. The hermetically sealed Case 211-07 ceramic flange package supports up to 30:1 full-phase VSWR ruggedness. Widely adopted for VHF radio, FM broadcast drivers, tactical communication and industrial RF generator equipment.

Core Advantages

Gold Metallization Chip

Great anti-electromigration performance, stable output during long-term CW operation.

30~200 MHz Broadband Performance

Superior linearity and efficiency, optimized for Class A RF amplifiers.

High Ruggedness Design

Tested under 30:1 full-phase VSWR, protecting the device against antenna open/short failure.

Hermetic Ceramic Flange Package

Optimized thermal conduction structure, simple flange installation for effective heat dissipation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the operating frequency range of MRF171A?

A1: The valid frequency band is 30 MHz to 200 MHz. Specifications are guaranteed at 150 MHz. Stable operation below 30MHz cannot be ensured.

Q2: Can MRF171A resist damage caused by antenna short circuit?

A2: Yes. This transistor has passed 30:1 full-phase VSWR load mismatch testing, improving reliability when antennas suffer open or short-circuit faults.

Q3: What RF transistors can be used as alternatives to MRF171A?

A3: Common alternatives include MRF174A and MRF134. Please note differences in power, gain and package. Input and output circuit re-matching is generally required for replacement.

Q4: What is the difference between MRF171 and MRF171A?

A4: MRF171A is the upgraded version with optimized linear gain and thermal stability. The original MRF171 has been discontinued by NXP, and MRF171A is the official recommended successor model.

Q5: Are there cross-brand competing devices similar to MRF171A?

A5: Ampleon BLF series and some STMicroelectronics VHF power MOSFETs cover similar frequency bands. However, package, impedance and ruggedness differ, and they are not pin-to-pin compatible.

Q6: Can this transistor work in Class C RF amplifiers?

A6: It is characterized and designed mainly for Class A operation. If used for Class C circuits, sufficient thermal margin evaluation is mandatory. Class A configuration is suggested for long-term stable operation.

Q7: What thermal guidelines apply to the Case 211-07 package?

A7: The flange must be firmly mounted to the heatsink with thermal grease. Keep junction temperature below +150°C to extend service life.

Q8: Can MRF171A be used for the 2m amateur radio band (144-148MHz)?

A8: Yes. Its frequency range fully covers 144~148MHz, and it is widely adopted for linear power amplifiers in 2-meter ham radio equipment.
